Community funded wells

This programme let people, villages and businesses take a loan from Rafiki Outreach to pay for their own well.

How it worked

Communities found that by uniting their efforts, they could pool their resources and save enough to pay for their own borehole well.

A community that paid for its own well had full ownership, with the responsibility to look after, protect and maintain it, and the confidence to keep working together on other parts of their lives.

Each well cost $4,000–$5,000, including labour, materials, supplies, travel, surveys and fees.
